UPMC

UPMC is an integrated global health enterprise headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and one of the leading nonprofit health systems in the United States. Forging new models of health care delivery, UPMC is harnessing technology, translating science into cures, and accelerating innovation worldwide. An $8 billion organization, UPMC is also western Pennsylvania’s largest employer, with 50,000 employees.

A passion for innovation lies at the heart of UPMC’s success. UPMC’s unique strategy of combining clinical and research excellence with business-like discipline translates into high-quality patient care for both western Pennsylvanians and the global community.

Today encompassing 20 hospitals, more than 400 clinical locations including long-term care and senior living facilities, a nearly 1.4-million member health plan, and a growing international and commercial segment, UPMC has three major operating components:

  •  Provider Services includes a comprehensive array of tertiary, community, and regional hospitals, specialty service lines, contract services and 2,700 employed physicians and associated practices.
  •  Insurance Services offers health insurance to companies and their employees, as well as recipients of government programs such as Medicare and Medical Assistance.
  •  International and Commercial Servicesexports UPMC's medical expertise and management know-how internationally, pursues commercialization opportunities, and develops strategic partnerships with industry leaders.

In collaboration with its academic partner, the University of Pittsburgh Schools of the Health Sciences, UPMC has advanced the quality and efficiency of health care and developed internationally renowned programs in transplantation, cancer, neurosurgery, psychiatry, orthopaedics, and sports medicine, among others.

The region also benefits from UPMC’s many charitable contributions and an array of community-based health improvement programs. UPMC’s contributions to the community amounted to more than $540 million in Fiscal Year 2009.

By leveraging its clinical and technological expertise to create marketable products and services, UPMC is transforming the economy of the region. UPMC is nurturing new companies, developing strategic business relationships with some of the world’s leading corporations, and expanding clinical services and state-of-the art medical expertise into international markets, including Italy, Ireland, the United Kingdom, and Qatar. UPMC is also pioneering information technology to link and integrate electronic medical records across multiple hospitals and care settings, and has invested in research to seed new fields such as regenerative medicine and biosecurity.

With new jobs, new businesses, and new models for health care delivery, UPMC represents the future of the health care industry — a future based on continual innovation that serves the needs of patients.
